12 Day accommodated safari - Zimbabwe highlights

This fully guided tour covers all the highlights of Zimbabwe while staying at the finest hotels and lodges on offer. This is not just about game-viewing but rather incorporates Zimbabwe's history, scenery and top wildlife destinations. Your personal guide will drive you in air-conditioned luxury and share his passion for the wildlife and country.

The first night is spent at Harare's premier hotel – Meikles, still very much family owned and run but setting the benchmark for the others to follow. The following morning it's an early start in your air-conditioned vehicle for Nyanga - approximately 3 hours away. This is Zimbabwe's answer to Scotland, high mountains, forest covered hills, misty mornings and warm log fires to ward off chilly evenings. The afternoon is spent exploring Nyanga, perhaps climbing the country's highest mountain or visiting the many waterfalls. Those handy with a rod can try their wits against the cunning rainbow trout.

The following day it's an easy drive down the Honde valley to Mutare and on to the Bvumba and Leopard Rock – arriving in time for lunch. The Bvumba borders Mozambique giving stunning vistas over the surrounding country. Whilst at Leopard Rock one can indulge in a game of golf, take one of the many walks or hikes or perhaps explore the nearby Botanical Gardens. For those who want to relax – the pool and terrace make for an inviting sabbatical.

It's a reasonably long drive via Birchenough Bridge to Masvingo and Great Zimbabwe. Norma Jeans Lake View Resort overlooks the manmade Lake Mutirikwi and is known for its beautiful gardens, home-style cooking, comfortable accommodation and friendly service. The hotel is part of the history of the area, as it is built around the tin-roofed homestead of Murray MacDougal, the man responsible for the building of the lake. We may decide to relax and do a sun downer cruise this afternoon and visit Great Zimbabwe the next morning or if not too hot, we will do it on arrival and have things slow down for tomorrow. Great Zimbabwe is another of the country's 4 world heritage sites – a massive stone structure over many hectares whose origin is not certain.

On the morning of Day 6 it is a relatively short 4 hour drive to Matobo Hills via Bulowayo. We spend the next two nights at the stunning Camp Amalinda, built into the granite boulders that inundate the area. The scenery is sublime and this combined with the long history of the area, from superb bushman paintings, the royal hunting grounds and the burial place of Cecil john Rhodes - makes for a fascinating visit. Add the greatest concentration of Black eagles in the world and visiting the Mother Africa community project – all inspiring in their own way.

From Matobo it is a relatively long drive (4-5hrs) to Hwange Main Camp and on to Davison's Camp deep into the Hwange National Park. Davison's is in the private Linkwasha concession, rich in wildlife and off limits to the general public – this is game-viewing at its finest. The Two days at Davison's are spent game-viewing by vehicle and for the more adventurous - morning guided walks.

From Davison's it is another relatively long drive (4-5hrs) to the mighty Victoria Falls and the Elephant camp – set on its own wildlife estate just ten minutes out of town. The Ele Camp is the benchmark for others to aspire to, this is without doubt the finest safari camp in Northern Zimbabwe. It's all about attention to detail, superb staff and your host - the legendary Jonathan Ellway. Whilst at Elephant camp you will be taken on a tour of the falls and on a sun downer cruise on the Zambezi.

The tour ends on the morning of day 12 when you say goodbye to your guide and are transferred to the airport in time to connect with your international flight.
