The St. James Path

The French Way of St. James is one of the most used hiking road around the world. Believers have used this road for over 400 years. From the monastery of Sainte Odile in Strasbourg, the trail crosses several regions of France through the Pyrenees and ends in the monumental church of Santiago de Compostela, Galicia in northwestern Spain.

Day 1: RONCESVALLES PAMPLONA 50 km. Arrival in Roncesvalles and visit of the Royal Collegiate Church of Notre Dame of Roncesvalles. Our jouney continues to Pamplona, the capital of Navarre. The pilgrim reaches Pamplona on the path of "Burlada" which leads up to the medieval bridge dating from the 15th century. Here we visit the cathedral. Dinner and accommodation at the hotel.

Day 2: PAMPLONA, ESTELLA, LOGROÑO, NÁJERA, SANTO DOMINGO DE LA CALZADA, BURGOS 220 km. After breakfast we drive to Estella. Here we visit the palaces from the 16th and 17th century and travel via the San Pedro district San Martin Square and the ancient Royal Palace, which accommodates the "Maeztu" museum. At the end there is the church of San Pedro de la Rua, one of the oldest buildings in the city. We continue to Logroño and Najera, ancient capital of Navarre from the 10th and 11th century. King Garcia Sanchez III founded the monastery of Santa Maria la Real, where the Pantheon of the kings of Navarre is to be found. In Santo Domingo de la Calzada, we visit the Cathedral, the Roman church of Nuestra Dama de la Plaza, and the main square. The aim of today's route is Burgos. Dinner and accommodation.

Day 3: BURGOS, CARRION DE LOS CONDES, SAHAGUN, LEON - 201 km. In the morning we visit the monumental Gothic cathedral of Burgos. We continue to Carrion de los Condes, where we visit the churches of Santa Maria del Camino de Santiago and Nuestra Señora de Belen, the monastery of San Zoilo", the tombs of the royal children of Carrion, the monastery and museum of "Las Clarisas. In the afternoon our trip brings us to Sahagun. Here we visit the Romanesque churches, built by the "Mudejar". The most beautiful is the San Lorenzo Church and the oldest, the San Tirso church. The tour ends in León. Dinner and accommodation at the hotel.

Day 4: LEON, PONFERRADA, O CEBREIRO, LUGO 236 km. After breakfast we visit the historic centre of León. We visit the Gothic cathedral, the museum, the Roman and medieval walls, and the Isidore church with impressive ceiling paintings. Then we continue to Ponferrada, capital of the region, "El Bierzo". Visit of the historic centre with the castle. On our way to Lugo lies Cebreiro, location of the shrine of Santa María of O Cebreiro. Dinner and accommodation in Lugo.

Day 5: LUGO, MELIDE, SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA 106 km. Today begins with a sightseeing tour of Lugo, with its Roman city walls. Then, past the city Melide, we reach Santiago de Compostela. Here we will have an impressive city tour: the cathedral, the "Obradoiro square, the "San Jeronimo" school, Raxoi Palace, Hostal of the Catholic kings and the palace "Gelmirez. Dinner and accommodation at the hotel.

Day 6: SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, RIBADEO, NAVIA, LUARCA, OVIEDO - 330 km. Today we discover the beauty of the green coast of Northern Spain. After breakfast we drive to Ribadeo, town on the border between Galicia and Asturias. After a short visit we continue along the beautiful coast of Asturias, past the charming fishing villages: Navia and Luarca are among the most beautiful. Arrival in Oviedo. Dinner and accommodation in our hotel.

Day 7: OVIEDO, SANTILLANA DEL MAR 195 km. After breakfast we take a short city tour. The rich historic centre offers its visitors many opportunities to discover its monuments. The Gothic Cathedral, dating from the 15th century, with the squares "Plaza Mayor" and "El Fontan", are among the most visited. Then we continue our trip to Santillana del Mar. Its facades of the medieval palaces, together with the caves of Altamira, are the main attractions of this city. Here unfortunately our tour comes to an end and we begin the return journey towards France.
