The Way of St. James / On the pilgrims trails

Since centuries, the Way of St. James leads numerous pilgrims to the grave of the apostle Jacobus in Santiago de Compostela. Discover with us the masterpieces of medieval art, Romanesque churches and stately Gothic cathedrals, but also small shrines, historical crosses and ornate bridges.

Day 1: BILBAO, BURGOS - 175 km. Arrival in Bilbao. We continue to our hotel in the Burgos area.

Day 2: BURGOS, CASTROJERIZ, LEON - 210 km (Hiking tour 20 km in approx. 5 hours). In the morning we take a city tour visiting the time-honoured city of Burgos. We will also visit the cathedral. Our coach brings us to Hornillos de Camino, where our hike to Castojeriz begins. We walk on wide field slopes, narrow paths and some paved roads. Then by coach to Leon.

Day 3: LEON, BIERZO, ASTORGA - 54 km (Hiking tour 16 km in approx. 4 hours). We start the day with a guided tour of the old royal city of León. In the historic center of this history-charged capital of the region with the same name, we visit two of the most important buildings on the entire Camino de Santiago: the Gothic Cathedral of Santa Maria and the Romanesque Basilica of San Isidoro. After that, the coach brings us to Hospital de Órbigo, where our hike brings us via Santibanez to Astorga. Dinner and overnight at Astorga or surroundings.

Day 4: ASTORGA, PONFERRADA 60 54 km (Hiking tour 15 km in approx. 4,5 hours). Today we walk a special stage on the the Way of St. James, from Foncebadón to the summit of the pass Cruz de Ferro, the highest point of Mount El Bierzo. Then we descend into the enchanting mountain village Molinaseca. We continue to the village of Las Médulas in the mountains of the same name and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Overnight in Ponferrada.

Day 5: PONFERRADA, VILLAFRANCA DEL BIERZO, OCEBREIRO, SAMOS - 105 km (Hiking tour 14 km in approx. 4 hours). In the morning coach ride to Villafranca del Bierzo. We visit the city, which has a long tradition of pilgrimage. We continue to Ambasmestas and hike to O'Cebreiro over the steepest pass of the Way of St. James and gateway to Galicia. Overnight in Samos / Sarria.

Day 6: SAMOS, TRIACASTELA, SAMOS - 10 km (Hiking tour 16 km in approx. 4 hours). This morning the coach brings us Triacastela where our today's hike starts. Our route takes us through the typical Galician landscape, to San Xil and on to Sarria. After a short rest, we visit the Benedictine monastery of Samos. Overnight in Samos / Sarria.

Day 7: SAMOS, PALAS DE REI - 66 km (Hiking tour 20 km in approx. 4,5 hours). Walk through a varied landscape with quiet valleys, wooded heights and lush meadows, as well as through the villages Barbadelo (Roman James Church), Mouzós and Ferreiros (Romanesque church of Santa Maria) to Portomarín. We continue by coach to Palas de Rei for dinner and overnight.

Day 8: PALAS DE REI, SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA 70 km (Hiking tour 2km in approx. 3 hours). Our coach takes us across to the Monte del Gozo Arzúa, the "mountain of joy" from where we for the first time see the towers of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. From the "mountain of joy" we continue walking to Santiago de Compostela. Dinner and overnight in Santiago.

Day 9: SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA. We start the day with a tour of the city, where we will of course visit the cathedral and the tomb of St. James. The afternoon is at leisure. Dinner and overnight in Santiago

Day 10: DEPARTURE Normally this trip is combined with a return flight, but if you wish so, a the return trip to the French border can be organised.
