Culture & Nature in the green north of Spain



Day 1: Arrival in San Sebastian, Zarautz. Our route through northern Spain begins with a visit to San Sebastián, famous city with a beautiful beach, the "Playa de la Concha". After a walk on the famous boulevard, we will visit the old town with its narrow streets, neo-classical square "Plaza de la Constitución", and the church Iglesia de Santa María, with a baroque facade. We continue to Zarautz, a former port and today a well-visited holiday destination. Accommodation and dinner at your hotel in Zarautz.

Day 2: THE MOST BEAUTIFUL COAST IN BASQUE COUNTRY. Zarautz, Ondarroa, Lekeitio - Guernica, Bermeo, Plantzia, Sopelana, Bilbao 130 km. Today we explore the fascinating coastline of the Basque Country. During the trip to Bilbao, along the coast, we get to know small, traditional fishing villages. In between, we stop to visit Guernica, a by UNESCO protected town. Here we visit the Casa de las Juntas" with the oak, the most important symbol of the Basque people. The suffering of its people during the civil war was reflected in one of the most famous paintings by Picasso. In the afternoon we travel further along the coast. One of the most interesting villages of this part of our trip is Bermeo, major port and commercial center of the zone. Arrival in Bilbao, dinner and accommodation.

Day 3: BILBAO, A CITY LEADING IN DESIGN. Bilbao, Santander 95 km. After breakfast we visit the historic center of this modern city of the Basque Country, and the collections of the Guggenheim Museum. The destination of today's stage is Santander. Dinner and accommodation in Santander.

Day 4: SIGNS OF OUR ANCESTOR. Santander, Santillana de Mar and Altamira Caves, Comillas, Cangas de Onís 130 km. Visit of this outstanding northern capital of Cantabria. It is worthwhile in any case, to visit its fishing district and to taste a couple fried sardines. The famous beach "Playa del Sardinero" and the cathedral with its magnificent monastery are among the most characteristic points of the city. After that we continue our trip to Santillana de Mar, one of the most visited and beautiful cities of northern Spain. Its facades of the medieval palaces, together with the caves of Altamira, which are known for their cave paintings, are the main attractions in this city. In Comillas we will be pleasantly surprised by the palace "Palacio del Marqués , a typical building in the Catalan Art Nouveau style, built by Antonio Gaudí. Overnight in Cangas de Onis

Day 5: DAY IN THE FRESH AIR OF THE NATIONAL PARK PICOS DE EUROPA. Cangas de Onís, Covadonga, Arenas de Cabrales, Oviedo 165 km. Today, particularly nature lovers, will get real value for their money in the magnificent high mountains. Covadonga is an almost mythical enclave of Asturias with its Basilica and the Santa Cueva = Holy Grotto, in which the statue of the Virgen de Covadonga" better known as" la Santina is kept If possible, it pays to continue to the lake, "Lago de La Ercina" in the area. This unfortunately depends on the weather. Arenas de Cabrales, is known for the famous and delicious cheese. Its quality, in addition to the excellent milk, is achieved by the maturation of the cheese in special caves. Then we finally leave the region to reach our destination, Oviedo, capital of Asturias.

Day 6: GEMS OF THE ASTURIAN COAST. Oviedo, Gijón, Luanco, Cudillero, Luarca, León 330 km. After breakfast a short sightseeing tour. The rich Old Town offers visitors many opportunities to discover its monuments: visit of the Gothic cathedral from the 15th century and the squares "Plaza Mayor" and "El Fontan, where you will find a rural market. Then we come to the romantic stage of the day, the beautiful fishing villages of the Asturian coast. Visit of Cudillero, a charming fishing village, located in the middle of a beautiful landscape. The last village on the route, Luarca, is one of the most beautiful. We continue to León. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.

Day 7: A DAY IN JACOBS FOOTSTEPS. León, Sahagún, Corrion de los Condes, Burgos 170 km. After breakfast follows a visit to the city of Leon, a medieval city. We visit the Gothic Cathedral and the Museum, the Roman and medieval walls, and Isidore and Mark Church, with impressive ceiling paintings. We continue to Sahagún and Carrion de los Condes the most important cities of the Camino de Santiago. After that we arrive at the royal city of Burgos. Dinner and overnight at your hotel in Burgos.

Day 8: THE NORTHERN TRIANGLE. Burgos, Vitoria, Pamplona 210 km. In the morning we visit the monumental Gothic cathedral of Burgos. Together with the Monastery Monasterio de las Huelgas Reales" and La Cartuja de Miraflores" they are the three most important monuments of the city. We continue to Vitoria, an important city of the Basque country. Its gem is the historic centre with the superb cathedral of Santa María and a wide pedestrian zone, which is called El Ensanche. The final destination of our entire trip is Pamplona. Dinner and overnight at your hotel in Pamplona.

Day 9: Pamplona RETURN HOME. After breakfast, departure from Pamplona and return home.
