The Douro River Valley

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Porto where we overnight.

Day 2

A morning visit to the famous ‘Ribeira’ (riverside) and port houses and after lunch we make our way inland to the Quinta above Pinhão. Overnight Quinta do Passadouro.

Day 3

A circular walk in the Pinhão valley through the vineyards where we will have time to catch our breath at Quinta do Portal and a private visit, 16km / 10miles. Overnight Quinta do Passadouro.

Day 4

We make a short drive westwards before walking through some of the tiny hamlets scattered above the valley and have magnificent views down to the river, 12km / 7.5miles. Overnight Quinta do Passadouro.

Day 5

From our Quinta we walk down to the town of Pinhão where we have a light lunch in a local restaurant by the waters edge before a leisurely boat trip on the famous river – magical, 13km / 8.1miles. Overnight Quinta do Passadouro.

Day 6

We drive to the town of Sabrosa (Magellan’s birthplace) to walk through the countryside to the remains of an Iron Age fort perched on a hill above the town. On our return we have a private tasting at the Quinta. 14km / 8.7miles. Overnight Quinta do Passadouro.

Day 7

After breakfast we make our eastwards to the frontier town of Miranda do Douro, perched high above the river. After lunch we walk through the historical town center and along the river past the ruins of watermills. Overnight Estalagem Santa Catarina, Miranda do Douro.

Day 8

An exhilarating walk through the “Parque Natural do Douro Internacional”, passing through woodlands and small villages with striking views of the river, 12km / 7.5miles Overnight Estalagem Santa Catarina, Miranda do Douro.

Day 9

Sadly it is time to part, we drive back to Porto after breakfast and we should arrive around lunch time.
