Uxmal and Maya Family – Scavenger Hunt
After a hearty breakfast, we will be one of the first to enter the famed Maya ball courts and temples of Uxmal; once again under the tutelage of our expert guide we will marvel at the achievements and mysterious demise of the Maya. Beholding the Pyramid of the Magician we are perplexed at the engineering, architectural, and social heights of the Maya and their myriad accomplishments before continuing on to lunch where a delicious earth cooked banana leaf wrapped meal of Pollo and Cochinita Pibil awaits. A family run affair, our friends will demonstrate the seasoning and methods involved in preparation of this delicious fare that takes over 2 hours to cook. Following lunch, we will be treated to an intimate visit to a local Maya family where age old traditions are still maintained; we will learn about their daily life as related and translated from Maya to Spanish to English! In the afternoon after lunch, we will return to the Hacienda where you will divide up into teams and set out to search for a variety of clues that will draw on all that we have learned so far of this magical region. You will need a combination of intellectual acuity, mental fortitude, physical prowess and creativity!

Day 3

Celestun
Today we will head to the UNESCO World Heritage Site and World Biosphere Reserve of Celestun. Our speedy launches will navigate the winding canals of this vast mangrove and wet lands complex arriving to visit the permanent colony of Pink Flamingos that make their home here. We return to the boat dock and the town of Celestun for a delicious treat of local seafood delights under the shade of our thatched roof palapa restaurant on the edge of the Gulf of Mexico before returning to the Hacienda. After lunch, we continue on a brief historic city tour including Merida’s colonial architecture, churches, and monuments of this thriving Yucatan city ending with a short “Calesa” ride. Day 4

Tixkokob, Izamal, and Chichen Itza
Today we will start with a visit to the traditional Maya village of Tixkokob to see how local families still practice the age old tradition of hammock weaving. Afterward, you will continue on to the Magic Town of Izamal to have lunch and explore the mysterious Yellow City including and interesting cruise in a calesa (horse drawn carriage) before continuing to your lodging at Mayaland Lodge nestled in the garden on the UNESCO Heritage Site of Chichen Itza.

Day 5

Chichen Itza and  Riviera Maya
Today we will enter the famed archaeological site of Chichen Itza upon its opening to learn about its impressive plazas, imposing ball courts, and temples as well as the Maya’s engineering, agricultural, and astronomical achievements. We will depart the archaeological site just as the crowds are arriving and enjoy lunch and swim in a cenote to cool off. The Yucatan Peninsula is a limestone shelf; due to the lack of elevation and the incredible porosity of the soil, there are no rivers in the Yucatan! As water drains easily through the limestone, it forms a vast network of underground rivers and sink holes that feature crystal clear water, eye-less fish, and interesting stalagmites and stalactites and offers an unusual swimming adventure in the distilled light of these underground caves! After our refreshing swim and lunch we will continue on to the lesser visited Mayan archaeological site of Ek-Balam before making our way to your stunning luxury hotel located on the idyllic Caribbean Coast with its crystalline blue waters.

Day 6

Riviera Maya and Sian Ka’an
After breakfast, we will transfer to one of the most extensive and important protected areas and UNESCO World Heritage Site of Sian Ka’an and set out with our local Maya naturalist guides to appreciate the flora and fauna in the mangrove and wetland estuaries. We will disembark from our speedy launches and effortlessly float through the peaceful waterways to fully understand the origin of the Maya birthplace of the Sky. We will continue on for a delicious lunch on the beach before returning northwards along the coast to our lovely seaside hotel.
