Portraits of Italy 15 Days-14 Nights

Day 1. Rome.
Upon arrival at Rome Fiumicino Airport your will be transferred to your hotel. Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. Welcome dinner and an introduction by your tour escort. Overnight.

Day 2. Rome.
After breakfast, enjoy a guided tour of the city, including: the Colosseum (from the outside), Trevi Fountain, Castel S. Angelo and St. Peter's Basilica (from the outside). In the afternoon visit the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel. Rest of the day is at leisure. Overnight.

Day 3. Rome-Florence.
After breakfast, you'll depart for Florence, the "Cradle of the Renaissance", crossing some of Italy's most beautiful regions, including: Lazio, Umbria and Tuscany. In the early afternoon enjoy a city tour with a local guide, which will include: Giotto's Bell Tower, Piazza della Signoria and many other timeless highlights. Dinner and overnight.

Day 4. Florence-Lake Maggiore.
After breakfast, depart for the Lombardia region continuing to Stresa/Baveno, two quaint picturesque towns on Lake Maggiore, where you will spend two nights. Lake Maggiore; one of Italy's most beautiful lakes, is known for its splendid climate and was featured in Ernest Hemingway's infamous novel "A Farewell to Arms". Rest of the afternoon at leisure. Dinner and overnight.

Day 5. Lake Maggiore-Lugano (Switzerland)-Lake Maggiore.
After breakfast, enjoy a full day excursion into the Alps and Switzerland. Skiriting Lake Maggiore admire Pallanza, Intra and Ghiffa before arriving in Lugano, where you will have free time to explore at your leisure. Return to Stresa/Baveno in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight.

Day 6. Lake Maggiore-Milan-Verona-Venice.
After breakfast, depart to Milan for a panoramic tour of the city by bus. Then continue on to Verona, one of Italy's most fascinating cities, which houses the famous Romeo and Juliet balcony and the Roman Theatre. Late afternoon arrival in Venice. Overnight at your hotel in Venice.

Day 7. Venice-Siena.
After breakfast, guided visit of St. Mark's Square and neighbouring sites. Early afternoon departure to Siena, through the splendid landscapes of Emilia Romagna and the Tuscany region. Dinner and overnight at hotel in Siena.

Day 8. Siena-San Gimignano-Chianti-Siena.
After breakfast, depart for a full day excursion in the Chianti area. Your first stop will be in San Gimignano, a picturesque medieval town declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Next stop will be in the Chianti Region at a famous wine estate, where you will sample the best Chianti red wines accompanied by a light lunch. In the afternoon return to Siena for a walking tour of the city, which will include: the Dome (from the outside) and II Campo Square: where twice a year the Palio race is run on bareback horses. Dinner and overnight.

Day 9. Siena-Assisi-Rome.
After breakfast, departure to Assisi, a great religious town significant of the life of St. Francis. Visit the great Basilica with its magnificent paintings by Giotto. Proceed to Rome. Overnight.

Day 10. Rome-Pompeii-Sorrento.
After breakfast, departure to Pompeii where you will enjoy a tour of the excavations of this ancient city destroyed by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD. Afternoon arrival in Sorrento. Dinner and overnight.

Day 11. Sorrento-Capri-Sorrento.
After breakfast, travel by ferry to the Island of Capri, famous since Roman times and favorite vacation spot of the Emperor Tiberius. Arrive at the port of Marina Grande and take a minibus to La Piazzetta. Lunch is included and you will have leisure time to explore. Return to Sorrento. Dinner and overnight.

Day 12. Sorrento.
Breakfast at hotel, and day at leisure in Sorrento. Opportunity to take an optional tour to Amalfi (paid for locally). Overnight.

Day 13. Sorrento-Monte Cassino-Roman Countryside.
After breakfast, depart for the Roman Countryside, stop enroute at the Abbey of Mt. Cassino, renowned for the "Battle for Monte Cassino" during World War II. Proceed to the Cassino War Cemetery, the largest WWII Cemetery in Italy. The cemetery contains 4265 grave markers of soldiers that died in the battle against the German army. In the afternoon arrival in the Roman Countryside (Frascati). Dinner and overnight.

Day 14. Roman Countryside.
Breakfast at hotel. Discover the lovely small villages in the south of Rome called Castelli, from the Roman countryside which has always been a wonderful holiday resort, due to the beauty of the landscape, the works of art, the typical local cuisine and the good wine! The first village you will visit is Castelgandolfo (pope's summer residen¬ ce) and the lovely lake of Albano. Then on to Grottaferrata, famous for its important 15th century monastery decorated with 16th century frescos of saint Nilus' life. Visit continues with Nemi, a village built on the slope of a hill overlooking Nemi lake. During this tour you will visit a winery, where you will be able to sample some of the best wines that Italy has to offer as well as various cheeses and meats. Return to Frascati. Dinner and overnight.

Day 15. Roman Countryside-Rome Airport.
After breakfast, transfer to Rome Fiumicino airport for your return flight home.
