Lake Tanganyika

The Lake Tanganyika is one of the biggest lakes of Africa; it is the second largest lake after the Victoria Lake and the world second deepest lake after the lake Baikal in Siberia. With 676 kilometers it is also the world longest lake. Its waters flow towards the Congo basin and then towards the Atlantic Ocean.

The Tanganyika Lake covers an area of 32.900 square kilometers. The northern end separates Burundi from the United Republic of Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo; the southern end separates Burundi from the Zambia.

The biological diversity is remarkable. More than 1,300 animal or plant species, from micro algae to more than 300 fish species, and also crocodiles live together. Some of the fish species are endemic species.
