7 Day Last Lions Safari

DAY 1: Okavango Delta
In the last 50 years, lion populations have plummeted from 450,000 to just 20,000. “The Last Lions”, by renowned filmmakers Dereck and Beverly Joubert, is set in the lush floodplains of the Okavango Delta and follows a lioness as she battles to ensure the survival of her cubs.

“The Last Lions” package includes a stay at the award-winning Sanctuary Chief’s Camp on Chief’s Island in the Moremi Game Reserve in the famous Mombo concession. The area is well known as the “predator capital” of Africa and is considered to have the finest game viewing in Botswana with all of the Big Five present.

On arrival at Maun Airport, a Sanctuary Retreats representative will meet and assist you to your onward flight. Depart Maun Airport on a Mack Air shared light aircraft charter flight to Sanctuary Stanley’s Camp. The flying time to Sanctuary Stanley’s Camp is approximately 15 minutes. Kindly note, however, that all inter-camp flights are subject to multiple pick ups and drop offs en route to your destination which could affect the flying time.

On arrival at the airstrip a Sanctuary Stanley’s Camp representative will meet and transfer you to the camp. The transfer time is approximately 20 minutes. This camp is situated in a 260,000-acre private concession, thus affording guests absolute exclusivity.

Guest accommodation consists of eight classic styled safari tents. The delicately appointed tents exude classic Africa; handcrafted beds dressed with the finest linen, antique furniture individually selected and oriental carpets that transport you to early 19th century Africa. Each unit offers en-suite facilities and a private deck. Hammocks and Morris chairs on the decks are perfect for relaxation in the African sunshine. The main building is raised on decking and offers extensive views over the surrounding floodplains. Stanley’s is carefully blended into the existing tree line, its main support being a large sausage tree.

The afternoon is at leisure to enjoy the game viewing activities. Sanctuary Stanley’s Camp offers some of the best game viewing in the Okavango, including sightings of lion, leopard and the rare and elusive wild dog. A completely unique feature is an educational experience with a group of semi-habituated African elephants and a highly recommended activity at an additional cost. Activities available at Sanctuary Stanley’s Camp include serene mokoro canoe excursions (subject to water levels), exclusive bush dinners, and game drives in customised, open 4 x 4 vehicles – including the rare opportunity of night drives. As Sanctuary Stanley’s Camp is in a private concession, guests also have the exclusive option of walking safaris with an armed professional guide.

DAY 2 – SANCTUARY STANLEY’S CAMP
The day is at leisure to enjoy the game viewing activities on offer, including walking safaris. Sanctuary Stanley’s professional guides accompany guests as they learn about the bush from a different perspective, up close and personal with the environment. Walking safaris are the perfect way to awaken one’s senses where guests can touch, feel and smell the African bush while listening to the various interesting stories the guides have to tell. Walks allow guests to read the news of the night in the smooth sand of the road. Lion, leopard, elephants, genets and even millipedes are all part of the bush, each with their story to tell.

DAY 3 – SANCTUARY CHIEF’S CAMP
Enjoy a morning game viewing activity followed by breakfast. A camp representative will transfer you to the airstrip; the transfer time will be advised to you locally by the camp management. Depart Sanctuary Stanley’s Camp on a Mack Air shared light aircraft charter flight to Sanctuary Chief’s Camp. The flying time to Sanctuary Chief’s Camp is approximately 15 minutes. Kindly note, however, that all inter-camp flights are subject to multiple pick ups and drop offs en route to your destination which could affect the flying time.

Sanctuary Chief’s Camp is a luxury bush camp situated on Chief’s Island in the exclusive Mombo Concession of the Moremi Game Reserve. This region is known as the “predator capital” of Africa and is considered to have the finest game viewing in Botswana including the Big Five.

Guest accommodation comprises of twelve secluded, permanent luxury bush pavilions. Each unit features a thatched roof, spacious seating area, en-suite facilities with indoor and outdoor showers as well as a private game viewing deck. Each unit boasts a generous mosquito net on a four-poster bed, two wardrobes, a book shelf, writing desk and mini bar. The main camp complex houses the dining area, bar, curio shop, library and reception area. This structure has been built into the existing landscape, under a heavy canopy of mature Jackal berry, Sausage and Rain trees. The main deck area is split-level and offers expansive views over the floodplain while the lower level of the deck houses an exquisite swimming pool. A range of spa treatments are offered in the treatment room.

DAY 4 – SANCTUARY CHIEF’S CAMP
The day is at leisure to enjoy the game viewing activities on offer, including incredible morning and afternoon game drives. The expert guides always on hand to share a wealth of wildlife knowledge, take guests deep into the bush in specially modified open 4 x 4 vehicles on morning and afternoon game drives to find the secluded places where elephant families congregate in search of the tastiest fruits and berries. The game viewing opportunities at Sanctuary Chief’s Camp are awe-inspiring. On the plains one may find the roaming lions that prey on the thousands of antelope, zebra and buffalo who live here all year round. Guests may also spot wild dogs. These extremely rare predators have been hunted to the point of extinction in most areas of Africa and this is one of their last strongholds. Intensely curious, painted dogs, as they are known here, are extremely rewarding to view and accessible to only the few. Sanctuary Chief’s is the ideal place to spot the big 5 – perhaps even the rare rhino. There are several local lion prides as well as leopards, genet cats and hyena are in abundance.

DAY 5 – SANCTUARY CHOBE CHILWERO
Enjoy a morning game viewing activity followed by breakfast. A camp representative will transfer you to the airstrip, the transfer time will be advised to you locally by the camp management. Depart Sanctuary Chief’s Camp on a Mack Air shared light aircraft charter flight to Kasane. The flying time to Kasane is approximately 1 hour 20 minutes. Kindly note, however, that all inter-camp flights are subject to multiple pick ups and drop offs en route to your destination which could affect the flying time.

On arrival at Kasane Airport a Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero lodge representative will meet and transfer you to the lodge. The transfer time is approximately 10 minutes.

Deep in the heart of the Botswana wilderness lies Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero, one of the most enchanting places on earth. Relax in luxurious thatched cottages, with modern freestanding baths, indoor and outdoor showers, terrace and private garden with hammock. Enjoy thrilling guided game drives in open-sided 4X4 vehicles that bring you to the heart of Africa’s largest concentration of elephants, as well as hippos, buffalos, antelope, lions and other creatures that gather on the banks of the Chobe River. Or join one of the acclaimed guides on a wonderous water safari on specially adapted motorboats.

Accommodation is in 15 cottages and each cottage measures 61 square metres, has its own en-suite bathroom with a modern freestanding bath, indoor and outdoor showers, private garden with hammock, “sala” or private balcony, mosquito nets, ceiling fans, air-conditioning, hairdryer, minibar as well as an in-room safe.

The main public area includes a lounge, outside dining area, dining room and library which are linked to outdoor viewing patios. The wine cellar is temperature controlled and houses a large variety of the finest South African wines. The fully fledged spa offers a range of spa and hydrotherapy treatments from both the Thalgo and Africology ranges. The lodge also boasts a split-level swimming pool, curio shop and a communications centre, which offers telephone, fax and internet access. DAY 6 – SANCTUARY CHOBE CHILWERO
The day is at leisure to enjoy the game viewing activities on offer. The best way to end a day of safari is sipping on a cocktail while watching an African sunset over the still waters of the Chobe River… Specially designed riverboats take guests up close to elephants as they wade in the river or near to the buffalo who gather on its shores. Sundowner cruises are also a great way of seeing animals up close as they come out of the shade to graze in the cooler evenings. The Chobe area is renowned for its abundance of elephants and dramatic sable and roan antelopes with their impressive horns. Sitatungas – antelope with splayed feet to help them run in swamps – are often seen here, as are the wild dog and lion that prey upon them.

DAY 7 – SANCTUARY CHOBE CHILWERO
Enjoy a morning game viewing activity followed by breakfast.
You will transfer via a ferry crossing to Livingstone Airport.
The transfer time with be approximately 1 hr 30 minutes.
Please note depending on the passport you carry a visa may be required to enter Zambia.
Depart Livingstone on a scheduled flight to your next destination.
