6 Day Moonscapes and Meerkats Safari

This adventure begins and ends at Maun International Airport in Botswana.

DAY 1: Jack’s Camp
On arrival at Maun International Airport you wil be met and then assisted onboard a light aircraft flight to Tsigaro Airstrip. A vehicle will be waiting to drive you to your camp in the incredible Makgadikgadi Pans National Park.

The largest salt pans in the world, the Makgadikgadi Pans are the remnants of an ancient lake. Interspersed among the pans is sandy desert, with occasional patches of vegetation. One of Africa’s biggest populations of zebra makes this expanse of white sand and salt their home. When rains fall during the wet season the pans are filled with water and attract large flocks of flamingo, as well as big herds of zebra, springbok and wildebeest, followed closely by predators. An ideal romantic safari honeymoon destination!

Spend two nights at Jack’s Camp in a stylish canvas tent with indoor and al fresco showers, as well as a private veranda.

DAY 2: Jack’s Camp
Today you’ll have the opportunity to visit some of the Kalahari’s charismatic meerkats. After a fun-filled morning learning about their quirky characteristics, you will be taken to a remote cattle post to learn about the traditional culture of the Botswana people and enjoy a scrumptious picnic breakfast. Afterwards you will venture to the renowned Chapman’s Baobab, which is acknowledged as the largest tree in Africa, and was the campsite of early explorers like Livingstone and Selous. In the afternoon you will have the opportunity to see one of Africa’s rarest carnivores – the brown hyena.

DAY 3 – 4: Kubu Island
Tuck into an early breakfast before hopping on a quad bike for your journey across the Ntwetwe Pan to Kubu Island. Travel in convoy across the vast lunar landscape, stopping for a refreshing picnic lunch. Arrive at Kubu Island – a mass of granite studded with ancient baobabs and renowned as one of the most romantically beautiful spots in Botswana – in the late afternoon.

Camp at Kubu Island for two nights, sleeping in a comfortable bedroll with hot water and comforter under a blanket of stars, a romantic setting ideal for the safari honeymooner!

Spend the next two days exploring this romantic island and its surroundings. Not far away is an ancient fortification that provides awe-inspiring vistas of the enormous Sowa Pan. Venture to the extinct mouth of the mighty Zambezi, which used to flow into the pans. The remaining beach is covered with beautiful water-worn pebbles amongst which you can find semi-precious stone. Kubu is also close to what is probably the biggest flamingo breeding site in the world.

After two days of exploration you will venture back across the pans to Jack’s Camp, where you can shake off the desert dust and enjoy a comfortable night’s stay.

DAY 5: Jack’s Camp
Return to Jack’s Camp for the day, staying overnight. Your stay includes all three meals, soft drinks, house wines, local brand spirits and beers, teas and coffees, emergency evacuation insurance, laundry and park fees.

DAY 6: Departure
Spend the morning on a guided walking safari with Zu/’hoasi Bushmen trackers. The trackers will teach you some of the skills that have enabled them to survive in the wilderness of the Kalahari.

After returning to camp for a quick lunch, you will be driven back to Tsigaro airstrip for a light aircraft flight to Maun International Airport where your adventure with us will end.
